Dentistry focuses on improving the patient's oral health. This is usually done through restorative treatments, such as bonding restorations, crowns, and root canal treatments. However, the dentist can also offer special appliances that function as preventive methods to prevent dental issues.
Most of these appliances can be created with a dental model and a dental vacuum forming machine.
A dental vacuum forming machine is a laboratory tool designed to create custom-made trays, mouthguards, or splints for the patient's mouth.
The machine employs a heated sheet of thermoplastic material and a powerful vacuum to shape it.
To create a tray, the practitioner needs to place the patient's dental model on the machine. Afterward, the thermoplastic sheet requires being placed on a holder on top of the model.
The dental vacuum former then heats the thermoplastic sheet. Once ready, the practitioner engages the sheet and dental model. The vacuum causes the sheet to be shaped as the underlying dental model. Therefore, creating a custom-made tray.
Once ready, the practitioner can take it off the machine and trim the edges.
The dental vacuum forming machine can be used to make several appliances, such as:
● Teeth whitening trays: They can be filled with the whitening gel
● Sports mouthguards: To protect the teeth while playing contact sports.
● Orthodontic retainers: To prevent teeth from shifting after orthodontic treatment.
